The landscape has a characteristic "feel"-- a pattern of light and shadow, open and closed space; a shape and size of fields, a regularity of vegetation.

We came across this field, or waterway, tossing in storm winds. It was unusual in the central Illinois prairie: the field is contoured. The draw is planted in a grass that we could not identify.

T
his farm was different. Nowhere else had we seen a crop like this one. The fields were contoured -and thus unfriendly to big equipment. This farm's story remains a mystery to us.
