Whole families of migrant laborers in the orchards of 1930's America followed the ripening of the crops. Peaches and apples in southern Illinois might be followed by cherries in Michigan. Migrants were transient in the landscape. Sometimes the growers who hired them knew where they came from; year after year they would return to the same farm. Others came and went, leaving only the barest trace upon the memories of the settled residents. Since the 1960s, Mexicans have picked the crops of the Anglo farmers.
